Over 1 billion people across the world rely on fish as their main source of protein, mostly in developing countries. In America, fish consumption is rapidly increasing with the growing awareness of its health benefits. Due to overfishing, over 70% of the world's fish are either fully exploited or depleted. As a result, fish farming, or aquaculture, has quickly stepped up to meet the demands of fish consumption.
Tilapia, is sometimes called “St. Peter’s fish” which comes from the story found in the Bible, Matthew 17: 24-27. Those that collected temple tax came to Peter and asked him “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?” Jesus didn’t have to pay because of being the son of who’s house it was but to prevent problems Jesus, told Peter “Go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a piece of money, take that and give it to them for Me and you.”
The passage doesn’t name the kind of fish it was and there is no real evidence that it was Tilapia but legion has Tilapia as “St. Peter’s fish.” Some say that Tilapia is also the fish used in the miracle of Jesus feeding 5,000 people using a small boys lunch which had five small loaves of barley bread and two small fish. This is story is found in all four gospels, Matthew 14:13-21; Mark 6:30-44; Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:1-15.
I read on “Fresh Tilapia Facts” that, Tilapia is fifth most popular seafood in US with a per capita consumption in 2007 of 1.14 lbs. Consumers widely agree that Fresh Tilapia Fillets are an excellent addition to a healthy diet. Fresh Tilapia fillets low in fat, low calorie, low carbohydrate and are high in protein. Fresh Tilapia fillets are also an excellent source of Phosphorus, Niacin, Selenium, Vitamin B12 and Potassium.
